Robert Howie:  Actor, Director and Writer

 

...In the West End he played Glad Hand in WEST SIDE STORY, the premiere of Noel Coward's SEMI-MONDE, Sandy Wilson's ALADDIN, Noel Coward in NOEL AND GERTIE (opposite Patricia Hodge), Redpenny in THE DOCTOR'S DILEMMA and Ian in the cult soap-spoof EXCLUSIVE YARNS- a role that Robert also played in the original Fringe and Channel 4 productions.

He recently made his New York debut recreating Ian for a possible Broadway production.
On Television he has also been seen in MATT'S MILLION and HARRY'S MAD for Carlton, PIE IN THE SKY, PLAYING FOR REAL and REID THE SHEEPSTEALER for the BBC, as well as various commercials including the recent 'Humpty Dumpty' campaign for Wall's Sausages, and the award-winning KIT KAT commercial, in which Robert appeared with two roller-skating Pandas!
He has written LADIES' MAN, BLAME IT ON MY YOUTH, both of which he also directed, and is a contributor to the NEW GROVE DICTIONARY OF MUSIC. He is responsible for entries on Musical Theatre.

Robert has a long association with Jessica Martin, having directed her in the UK premiere of SWINGTIME CANTEEN at the King's Head, and co-written and staged her one-woman musical, the latest version of which - WHERE WAS I?- has just played off-Broadway.

For ten years Robert has worked with students at the Arts Educational School of Musical Theatre, and as well as directing West End Showcases at the Apollo, Criterion and Players Theatres, and also CHICAGO, INTO THE WOODS, GYPSY, RAGS, NINE, OKLAHOMA!, THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS, COMPANY, and HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING.
He has lived in Hove for three years and is co-founder of BRIGHTON STAGERS with William Pool.
